Does God Whine About Your Wine?

Genesis 9:20-23 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

OK. We skipped Genesis 4 with Cain and Abel, and the question Does God prefer Meat or Vegetables? Maybe another day.

In chapter 9 we find the first Scriptural reference to wine and drinking/drunkenness.

After the flood, Noah planted a vineyard. It seems apparent that Noah enjoyed the product of his labor and in verse 21 he got drunk. His son found him naked inside his tent and told his brothers, who sheepishly covered daddy up.

So, I question, does God whine about your wine? Is abstinence truly the only “spiritual” way in life?

Can I even answer this question in 500-600 words? Let’s give it a shot!

What is interestingly missing in Genesis 9 is any mention of encouragement or condemnation for Noah’s vineyard or drinking. Nor does there seem to be any problems with him being drunk.

Ham is the only one who gets rebuked. This seems to be in reference to his making public his father’s private shame. Remember that the next time you shave the eye brows of your passed out buddy!

As we discussed earlier the Fall of man brought about the knowledge of good and evil… negative consequences along with the positives.

Scripture speaks of both positive and negatives of wine… so I suggest that the first rule we may want to make is: Alcohol is itself neutral. It is our attitudes and use that are either good or evil.

In the Mosaic law, it is considered a positive to bring God a Drink Offering; the first fruits of the vine.

Jesus’ first miracle is turning water into wine (John 2). And , by the way, He turns it into Good wine. Top shelf is the way Christ went with it not the Boone’s Farm that was expected. He also knew the main reason of it’s being wanted is that people were wanting to continue their drunkenness.

I think this leads to the second rule: There is a time and place for drinking. God is not against revelry. It shouldn’t overtake our lives though. If you are constantly looking to your next drunk/party you are looking to find all the negative consequences to make their way into your life.

Scripture has several places that describe the effects of drunkenness on decision making. Esther chapter 1 tells us about Xerxes, King of Persia. He made several drunken decisions that effected his personal life and even some with historical and global significance.

At this time he was convincing his officials to finance and give soldiers and resources to conquer Greece…

His drinking caused him to dispose of his wife. He finally killed her on the way to Greece.

His getting officials drunk effected their judgment on  supporting this royal whack job in what ended up being an utterly chaotic invasion.

Lost the battle, it was the beginning of the end of the Persian empire… It could have made it the end of the Jews, except for the providence of The Lord.

The third rule: Never make decisions while drinking. Rule 3a: Drunks are bad leaders

I could go on a bit more but we will stop here for now. Alcohol will be mentioned in later posts too.

To surmise… Wine has been negative in many ways but please remember that wine is also used to represent the blood of Christ; that which is the answer to all the negatives in our lives and world.

wine

So lift that glass of red high. As you toast your friends & loved ones add a toast to God also. Praise him for creating the grape and wine. Thank him that just as Shem and Japheth covered their father’s sinfulness Christ also covered yours.

The Pastor’s Table: The End of the Free Lunch… Genesis 3

apple

This is where some people will start thinking that I’ve gone off the deep end…

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread… 1Corinthians tells us that God chose the “foolish”… So I am in good company!

In Genesis 2 we found that God created, and wants us to be creative. We found Man and Woman in the ideal environment. Perfect in every way. Because there was no knowledge of evil. In other words no experience of problems and difficulties.

When man planted a seed it grew just like it was supposed to… There was no drought. There were no diseases. There were no weeds to challenge the plant for nutrients. The food didn’t make him sick. The food didn’t make Eve fat.

One tree was kept from mankind.

So, of course, someone had to bring up the idea that God was ripping them off…

First reason It’s only one thing BUT it’s the BEST thing.

Second reason He’s keeping you from your full potential.

Third reason There isn’t any consequence.

Yes I played into the stereotype by inserting a picture of an apple.

No one knows for sure what that particular “fruit” that may have been. We will not debate the issue today… But let’s assume that it wasn’t the “best”. Everything that God created was “Good”. He never claimed any of his creation to be better. It wasn’t even a necessity. Man could have lived and prospered without it.

Most of the world seems to have bought into the philosophy that we can be gods, ourselves, if we just have the right information… This information is found in secrets. If we know these secrets we will rise in our potential until we become _______.

No consequences? At least the negative ones?

Food seems to be a built in sermon illustration for the consequences of sin in this world.

What happened to food at the eating of the forbidden fruit? We got exactly what Satan offered Eve… the knowledge of evil, along with the good.

Before those little nibbles were taken… mankind could have put extra scoops of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia on top an extra thick slice of chocolate cake with nothing but praise to God for the wonders of cake and ice cream… Afterwards we get what we have now the experience of the evil with the good. Calories! Fats! Sugars! Gluten!

As we get farther from the fall of mankind we notice more and more of these negative consequences. Many of these can be attributed to (or at least aggravated by )  the food we eat.

Between me and my wife alone, I count these as consequences to Adam and Eve’s choice:rotten.applegg

    • Obesity
    • High Cholesterol
    • GERD/ Reflux
    • Fibromyalgia/ Inflammation
    • Celiacs
    • High Blood Sugar
    • Allergies
    • Chronic Fatigue
    • Dental problems
    • Etc.

Before these nibbles the first couple had freewill, the ability to use one’s will without consequence. Adam planted a tomato he got a tomato. Afterward Adam would plant a tomato and ALSO get weeds, insects, hurt back, sunburn.

Likewise, we are  able to make choices… but, they come at a price… Even our good choices. Just think about eating less red meat. Eat more fish the MDs tell us. We do and then they tell us to limit our intake of fish! Why? Because it has PCBs and Mercury.

Chicken: Good and Good for You! Right. Just make sure you prepare it correctly so that it is cooked all the way through, don’t let it touch other parts of the meal so they don’t make you sick from cross contamination. Clean and sanitized everything and yourself after preparation.

Yes, Satan was right… we would know the experience of Good and Evil together. Where he was wrong was that it doesn’t make us Godlike. Nor does it bring us the fullness of human potential.

Every meal should remind us the consequences of sin.

Just like our food… sin may taste good at first bite, but it has very real and lasting consequences.

One little bite ended the Free Lunch Program.

The Pastor’s Table: The Blessing of Food… Genesis 2

Organic food

Maybe I’m different. I have never had a problem with the idea of God.

I have no problem looking at the universe and declaring that there is an Intelligent, loving Creator.

I have questioned and debated who that may be… and what that means for mankind and even more so myself in particular.

The first two chapters in Genesis teach us that God created all things, and He found them all to be “Good” and that this world was created to place man (the image of God) as the care taker.

Chapter 2 verse 7 says “the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being”.

The very ground that gives us nourishment to sustain us is the very ground used to form us in the first place.

From that formed ground, filled with the breath of God, came the caretakers of this world v.15.

Chapter 2 tells of the symbiotic relationship of Creator & creation through the caretaker who is physically connected to the ground and spiritually connected to God.

What God created, man named.

What man named he was trusted to take care of and enjoy.

But, it was found that man needed just one more thing.

He was connected to the Creator and he was connected to creation.

But, he had no one to share with.

No one was there to help him care take.

No one was there to enjoy the product of his work and efforts.

His suitable helper was taken from his rib and fashioned into a woman… to which it was now man’s turn to proclaim that was created was found to be “good”.

The symbiotic relationships were now all together.

It didn’t last long… But that is so next week!

Some lessons learned in Chapter 2:

  1. God wants us to acknowledge His creation.
  2. God wants us to be care takers.
  3. God wants us to be creative.
  4. God wants us to share the toils and the joys with each other.

Some activities for you and loved ones.

  1. Practice thanking God for His creation.
        1. Simple prayers: I like what I understand to be a Jewish prayer start… Praise be to the Lord God, King of the universe for___________. Fill in the blank
  2. Plant something that you will eat.
        1. I think we Americans have lost the symbiotic relationships. Most of us have no clue where our dinner comes from. Plant something like Parsley that is easy to grow, and can be used in your family meals.
  3. Try a new food.
        1. I recently had Brussel Sprouts. For the first time as far as I know. They were much better than I ever imagined. Start with just a taste. Have it with something you know you like. God created so much and wants us to be creative too.
  4. Invite someone to dinner.
        1. We were created to share

I do believe that when our meals reflect these symbiotic relationships that we will be more nourished spiritually, emotionally and physically.

The Pastor’s Table: Food for Your Soul

The Smoke’ N Goat believes that every meal should be a Soulful experience.

The Goat defines a Soulful Meal as:

  1. One in which the cook & diners are led into the wonders of nature.
  2. One in which the cook and diners are knit together in fellowship and hospitality.
  3. One in which cook and diners come closer to and are thankful to the Creator/Lord.

food-additives-safety

The Goat has had many jobs in his 50 yrs. At one time the count was at 36 different ones. That was almost 15 years ago. I’ve added a few since then. Ordained minister is one of those.

I have read a lot of Christian books. I love theology… BUT, I have never seen anywhere the Theology of Food!

This perplexes me a little (sometimes a lot).

Food is found just about everywhere in the Bible… The Bread of Life, Passover Meal, the Lord’s Supper, The Marriage Feast, etc.

Some may be interested in the Jewish feasts: They may be seen as God giving us the “duty” to BBQ, and go camping. They are all certainly associated with the planting and harvesting of crops.

For my agnostic friends I have just one simple request. I challenge you to stop and open mindedly ask yourself this question:

If there is a Creator, what may be learned about him

(for the lack of a better term) by examining food and dining?

So every Thursday the Smoke’ N Goat invites you to the Pastor’s Table for a tasty look at theology.

Our first looks will be in Genesis 2 The Blessing of Food & Genesis 3 The Curse of Food.

May our bodies, lives and souls be filled.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Pastor Douglas
